The Office of Student Affairs has put an end to several long­ stand ing University traditions by b ann ing in itia tion -re la ted rites conducted by dorms and student groups. The directive says the initia­ tions “jeop ard ize the s e lf -e s ­ teem and sa fe ty o f stu d en ts , affect the University as a whole and are, therefore, strictly pro­ hibited." The regu la tion com es after severa l w om en reported that fr e sh m e n from D illo n H all kissed them w hile dorm re s i­ dents chanted “slut” during the h a ll’s tr a d itio n a l S ca v en g er Hunt on Sept. 1. Student A ffairs d en ied that the new regulation is a direct r e s u lt o f th e D illo n e v e n t . “T h a t’s a b s o lu te ly n o t th e case,” said William Kirk, assis­ tan t v ice p res id e n t for r e s i­ d e n c e life . “T h e U n iv e r s ity doesn’t take action as a result of isolated incidents.” Kirk said that his office has been investigating the activities for several years, and decided this year w as an appropriate time to act. The d irective b an s “e v en ts that appear to dem ean, deride or hum iliate new m em bers or that place the personal safety of students in jeopardy.” Kirk said this includes annual events su c h as D illo n ’s S c a v e n g e r H u nt an d St. E d w a rd ’s and Zahm Hall’s annual freshm an rites. “These kind of activities are not appropriate at Notre Dame if th e y are n ot w e lc o m in g ,” Kirk said. “The only kind of ac­ tivity that w e feel com fortable about allowing is one that w el­ com es and em braces a member into a community.” Students who plan, sponsor M see POLICY, page 4
